Je vais vous parler de ces Tongiens qui, un jour, quittèrent Tonga.

I'm going to tell you about the Tongans who, one day, left the island of Tonga.

Dans leur île, ils s'occupaient à divers travaux.

On their island, they used to go about various jobs.

Il y avait Caiye, Nyie, et d'autres encore ; ils vivaient à la façon tongienne.

There was Caiye, Nyie, and others; they lived in the Tongan fashion.

A la suite d'un conflit, ils durent quitter leur île ;

Because of a conflict, they had to leave their island

ils partirent en pirogue,

They left in canoes

et arrivèrent à Walpole.

and they arrived in Walpole.

Ils laissèrent leurs deux pirogues au bord de mer, et montèrent sur les hauteurs de l'île.

They left both their canoes on the sea shore and went up into the highlands.

Toutefois, deux hommes restèrent pour garder les pirogues.

But two men stayed to guard the canoes.

Les autres s'installèrent à Walpole.

The others settled in Walpole.

Ils n'y restèrent pas très longtemps, à peine une année.

They didn't stay there very long : only just a year.

Ils firent pousser les plants qu'ils avaient emportés, mais la terre n'était pas bonne.

They grew the plants they had brought with them, but the soil was poor.

Ils avaient pour habitude de grimper au sommet de grands arbres, d'où ils apercevaient parfois des choses qui avoir l'air de flotter au loin, très loin.

They were used to climbing up into the high tree tops, from where they could see things in the distance, which seemed to be floating in the sea.

Un jour, alors que deux des femmes étaient justement perchées en haut d'un arbre, elles crurent voir à nouveau quelque chose qui flottait.

One day, when two women were perched up on the top of a tree, they thought once again that they had seen something floating.

Elles allèrent chercher deux autres personnes, deux hommes, pour qu'ils regardent à leur tour.

They went to find two more people, two men, so that they in turn could have a look.

A force de scruter l'horizon, ils comprirent qu'il s'agissait d'une île.

And, after looking long and hard at the horizon, they realised that it was an island.

Et ils pensèrent que ce serait une bonne chose d'aller dans cette île.

And they thought it would be a good idea to go to this island.

Mais comment s'y rendre!

But how could they get there?

Les deux pirogues avaient été abandonnées.

The two canoes had been abandoned.

Ils se mirent en route.

So they set off.

Il fallait que l'un d'eux parte à la recherche des deux pirogues.

One of them had to go and look for the two canoes.

Il trouva les deux hommes qui étaient restés au bord de mer, ils étaient tous deux encore en vie.

He found the two men who had remained on the sea shore

Après avoir discuté un moment, il leur dit :

After they had talked for a moment, he said to them :

"Vous allez venir avec nous, nous allons tous partir là-bas, vers cette île que nous avons aperçue.

"You are going to come with us. We are all going away to the island we have seen

Nous n'avons pas d'autre moyen pour reprendre la route, il n'y a pas d'autres pirogues que les vôtres."

There is no other way to get there, there are no other canoes than these".

Alors ils partirent, tous ceux de Tonga qui s'étaient installés à Walpole.

So off they went, all the people from Tonga who had settled in Walpole

Ils partirent tous, hommes et femmes,

Off they went, men and women,

tous ceux qui étaient arrivés à Walpole.

All the people who had arrived in Walpole.

C'est ainsi qu'ils atteignirent l'île des Pins et débarquèrent à Winia.

That's how they reached Pine Island and landed in Winia.

Ils restèrent un moment assis sur le rivage.

They stayed for some time sitting on the shore.

Un couple qui s'en était allé au bord de mer ramasser des coquillages aperçut les Tongiens,

A couple who had gone down to the sea shore to gather shellfish noticed the Tongans

et s'en alla aussitôt prévenir le chef

and off they went immediately to tell their chief.

- à l'époque, le chef de l'île des Pins, c'était Troulu -

(at the time, the chief of Pine Island was Troulu)

que des gens étaient arrivés au bord de mer,

that some people had landed on the sea shore,

qu'ils étaient très beaux bien que d'allure différente.

That they were good-looking and weren't the same as them.

Avec ses sujets armés de leurs sagaies et de toutes leurs autres armes, le chef Troulu se mit immédiatement en route pour aller voir ces Tongiens, dans la ferme intention de les tuer, et de les manger...

With all his subjects, armed with their spears and all their other weapons, chief Troulu set off immediately to see the Tongans, firmly intending to kill them and eat them.

Arrivés auprès des Tongiens, le chef de l'île des Pins et ses sujets leur adressèrent la parole,

Once they had arrived where the Tongans were, the chief of Pine Island and his subjects spoke to them,

mais les Tongiens ne comprenaient rien à la langue du pays.

but the Tongans didn't understand the local language.

"Qu'allons nous donc pouvoir faire de ces gens ?" se dirent les habitants de l'île des Pins.

"What are we going to do with these people now?", thought the inhabitants of Pine Island.

Quelqu'un eut alors l'idée de faire venir la femme du chef Kamejo Troulu, pour qu'elle essaie de leur parler en langue de Winia, au cas où ils la connaitraient.

Then somebody had the idea of fetching the wife of chief Kamejo Troulu, so that she could try to speak to them in the language of Winia, which they might understand.

C'est ainsi que l'épouse du chef s'adressa aux Tongiens dans sa langue à elle, en leur demandant : "D'où venez-vous ?"

And so the chief's wife spoke to the Tongans in her own language. She asked them : "Where are you from?"

A ces mots, les Tongiens coururent l'enlacer.

Hearing these words, the Tongans rushed up to embrace her.

L'épouse du chef s'écria alors : "Mes frères ! ce sont mes frères !"

The chief's wife then cried out :"My brothers! They are my brothers!"

"Emmenez-les chez moi" dit le chef.

"Take them back to my house", said the chief.

C'est ainsi qu'on les emmèna chez le chef Kamejo, qui résidait à l'intérieur de l'île.

And so they were taken inland, to chief Kamejo's house.

Les Tongiens restèrent chez lui plusieurs années durant.

The Tongans stayed there for several years.

Puis voilà qu'un jour, Troulu s'en alla rendre visite au grand chef Coqatr, à Mu, à la chefferie de Hnaja.

Then, one day, Troulu went off to visit the great chief Coqatr, in Mu (Lifu), in the main town of Hnaja.

Troulu était accompagné de trois Tongiens, venus avec lui depuis Winia.

Troulu had three Tongans with him, who had accompanied him from Winia.

Coqatr vit arriver ces trois hommes dans la force de l'âge, si beaux et si différents des siens.

Coqatr saw them coming, these three men in the prime of life, so handsome and so different from his own people.

Le grand chef Coqatr demanda au chef Troulu de l'île des Pins :

The great chief Coqatr asked chief Troulu of Pine Island :

"Mais d'où viennent-ils, ces hommes ?"

"Where did these men come from?"

Troulu lui répondit : "Ce sont mes sujets, ils sont arrivés en pirogue chez moi, ce sont des Tongiens."

Troulu replied, "They are my subjects. They arrived on my island in canoes, they are from Tonga".

"Coqatr lui dit : "Laisse-les moi, je voudrais bien qu'ils deviennent mes sujets, des hommes de cette facture !".

Coqatr said to him :"Leave them here with me. I would like to have men built like this become my subjects".

Mais Troulu lui rétorqua : "Oh non, je ne vais pas te les donner ;

But Troulu replied : "No, no, I won't give them to you,

je vais repartir avec eux, et j'en ai beaucoup là-bas chez moi, de ces gens, de ces Tongiens."

they're going back with me, and I've got a lot more of them back home, Tongans like these".

Ils retournèrent à Winia.

They went back to Winia.

Après leur départ, Coqatr garda au fond de lui le désir de récupérer ces hommes pour en faire ses sujets.

After they had gone, Coqatr still wanted to have these men to make them his subjects.

Coqatr fit venir, parmi les habitants de Lösi, les guérisseurs,

Coqatr called for the medicine men from among the inhabitants of Lösi

pour qu'ils préparent un médicament capable d'arracher les Tongiens à l'île des Pins, afin qu'ils deviennent ses sujets ; en effet, malgré le refus du chef de l'île des Pins, il désirait toujours les avoir comme sujets.

for them to prepare a magic spell which would attract the Tongans away from Pine Island and make them become his subjects, because he still wanted to have them as his subjects.

Ses guérisseurs préparèrent des médicaments et lui dirent :

His medicine men prepared some "medicine", and said to him :

"Coqatr, après-demain, quand tu t'éveilleras à Hnaja, les hommes seront là, sur ton terrain du bord de mer."

Coqatr, the day after tomorrow, when you wake up in Hnaja, the Tongans will be there, on your land beside the sea".

Le jour dit, Coqatr se réveilla, et dans le ciel, il vit comme un immense arbre, un faux-manguier écarlate.

On the day they had said, Coqatr woke up, and he saw in the sky a kind of huge tree, a scarlet Cerbera tree.

Il y avait des hommes partout depuis Feneluenu jusqu'aux environs de Olan.

There were men everywhere, from Feneluenu as far as the outskirts of Olan.

La totalité des Tongiens de l'île des Pins était là, ils étaient venus jusqu'ici.

All the Tongans from Pine Island were there, they had all come this far.

Le grand chef Coqatr s'écria : "Voici mes sujets !"

The great chief Coqatr exclaimed : "Here are my subjects!"

Il alla les chercher et ramena les Tongiens dans son domaine, chez lui.

He went to fetch them, and brought the Tongans back to his estate.

Il les installa ici.

He settled them here

Et c'est ici qu'ils sont restés.

And this is where they stayed.

Une année peut-être après leur installation, Fao arriva.

Maybe one year after they settled here, Fao arrived.

Fao, c'est celui qui a apporté la religion ; il débarqua avec sa pirogue à Ahmelewedr, chez Hnaweo.

Fao was the man who brought religion; he arrived in his canoe in Ahmelewedr, at Hnaweo's place.

Il arriva ici à Ahmelewedr, à la hauteur de Huan, chez les gens d'Ahmelewedr.

He arrived here in Ahmelewedr, up towards Huan, among the people of Ahmelewedr.

Ces derniers accoururent en criant : "là en bas, en bas, il y a un bateau ;

The people ran up shouting "Down there, there is a boat down there,

allons voir s'il y a quelqu'un à tuer et à manger !"

let's go and see if there is someone we can kill and eat!"

Ils coururent et encerclèrent Fao, resté dans sa pirogue.

They ran down and encircled Fao, still in his canoe.

Ils entourèrent Fao et ils lui parlèrent,

They encircled Fao and spoke to him,

mais Fao ne comprenait pas un mot de ce qu'on lui demandait.

But Fao didn't understand a word they were saying.

On lui parla en nengone, Fao ne comprit rien.

They spoke to him in Nengone, but Fao didn't understand.

Pour toute réponse, Fao montrait la Bible en levant un doigt vers le ciel.

As an answer, Fao showed them the Bible and pointed towards the sky.

Alors on lui parla dans des langues de la Grande Terre, mais ces langues, Fao ne les comprenait pas non plus.

Then they spoke to him in the languages of the Mainland, but Fao didn't understand these languages either.

La seule chose qu'il faisait, c'était de montrer le livre en levant le doigt vers le ciel.

The only thing he did was to show the book and point towards the sky.

Les sujets de Hnaweo dirent alors : "Les manières de cet homme sont incompréhensibles.

So the people of Hnaweo said : "This man's manners are incomprehensible.

Il n'y a pas une langue du pays qu'il entende.

There isn't a single language from around here that he understands.

La seule solution, c'est peut-être d'aller chez Coqatr lui demander un de ses sujets Tongiens

The only thing we can do is maybe go and see Coqatr and ask one of his Tongans

qui pourrait essayer de communiquer avec cet homme et savoir d'où il vient."

to try and communicate with this man, to find out where he came from".

C'est ainsi que le conseiller du chef Hnaweo s'en alla trouver le grand chef, le vieux Coqatr :

And so chief Hnaweo's counsellor went off to find the great chief, old Coqatr :

"Je suis venu chercher un de tes sujets pour qu'il vienne parler à un homme là en bas, un homme qui est arrivé dans la baie, mais qui ne parle pas comme nous.

"I've come to fetch one of your subjects so that he can speak to a man who is down there, a man who has arrived in the bay, but who doesn't speak like us.

Nous avons essayé toutes les langues, mais il ne sait en parler aucune, il ne fait que désigner quelque chose dans le ciel.

We have tried all languages, but he can't speak any of them. All he does is point to something in the sky.
