Then a hunter came wandering down [one day to the place where a girl had been left for K.]

Again it was like an earthquake.
Then when he roared again, it was in the front yard.
The hunter made as if to go inside his mouth.
The hunter came out and told him,
"OK, you're a man-eater, it seems,
so now eat me!
Eat me! You've come to my house all the way up from your house.
Close your eyes!
Open your mouth and hold still! I'll jump into your mouth!" said the hunter.
Then Kanayongba opened his mouth and closed his eyes and stood there.
Then when the hunter took up his bow, he lay down and stretched it with his legs. He pulled it back with his hands.
He shot the arrow — he shot it so that it went into Kanayongba's throat reaching his heart.
He fell over.
When he fell over, it was like an earthquake.
His head went into the river Mewa.
The water was blocked for a time.
The flow was blocked, and then what happened was, when those who had gone up and stayed over in the forest looked down,
they said, "Well, by now he's already eaten her up," and they wept.
They went on weeping and then a bit later when they looked again there was smoke wafting up from the house.
Smoke wafted up.
Even so, they sat silently.
"Has Kanayongba gone or not?" they wondered.
Kanayongba had fallen, and in the house, the one who had been left for Kanayongba's meal kindled the fire.
She gave millet beer to the hunter.

When the smoke wafted up, her parents saw it and said, "Well! There's smoke.
Let's go have a look what's going on in the house." When they came down, their daughter was sitting there,
and a man they didn't recognize — an old man — was there too.
They talked: "Where do you live? Which way are you going?"
"I'm a hunting man.
You left your daughter here as food for Kanayongba.
I killed Kanayongba.
I killed him and here I am," he told them.
"Well, then, killer of Kanayongba, take her, our youngest daughter!"

Then when their daughter was leaving, the old man and the old woman took counsel and said, "Now what should we give her?"
